Frequently asked questions

Short, straight answers about the book and about Generative Engine Optimization. Still stuck? Get in touch.

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

GEO is the practice of making your business easy for AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity to read, trust and cite when they answer a question. It is to AI answers what SEO was to a list of links.

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?

They are two names for largely the same discipline. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) focuses on being cited by generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the broader, earlier term that also covers featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and voice assistants. The work overlaps almost completely, so building for one improves the other.

Do I need a developer or a budget to do GEO?

No. The whole method is built to be done by the founder without an agency or a developer, and without a budget a growing business can't justify. Most of the fixes take an afternoon.

Is GEO the same as SEO?

They overlap but they are not the same. SEO optimises for a ranked list of links and chases the click. GEO optimises for a single synthesised answer that names businesses and chases the citation. Good SEO foundations help your GEO, but GEO adds work SEO never needed.

How long does GEO take to show results?

Some fixes, like a clear FAQ page or consistent business listings, can change what AI says within weeks. Authority signals build over months. The book includes a 90-day calendar that paces the work realistically alongside running a business.

Will this work outside the UK and US?

Yes. The method applies in any market. The book includes specific guidance for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Singapore and New Zealand, plus a full chapter on entering new international markets.

How does a book about AI search help me attract investors?

Seed and angel investors and early-stage VCs increasingly use AI tools to source and screen deals before they make contact. The same signals that make AI recommend you to a customer make AI describe you credibly to a funding partner. Part three of the book covers the four investor-facing pages that do this.

What is the TRACE method?

TRACE is the five learnable signals AI uses to decide who to cite: Trust, Readability by AI, Authority, Citation potential and Entity clarity. You score your business on each, then fix your lowest score first.

Is the book for beginners or advanced marketers?

It is written for founders, owners and innovators doing this themselves, so it assumes no marketing background and explains everything in plain language. Experienced marketers will still find the GEO and investor-visibility frameworks new.

What format is the book available in?

Be the AI Answer is available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle editions.

Are the templates really free?

Yes. The TRACE Scorecard, the 10-Prompt Test template, the ACS Formula checklist and the schema markup checklist are free to download and print from the free toolkit page.
